Cream fue el primer supergrupo de los años 60. La reunión de Eric Clapton, guitarra, Jack Bruce, bajo, y Ginger Baker, batería, dio lugar a la más vital y efectista música entre 1966 y 1968, a la descarga de rock y blues más fuerte desde la aparición del rock and roll.

Cream fue demasiado para su tiempo. Su sonido era bronco, duro, sucio y real. Supuso el adiós del pop por la vía del rhythm and blues y la búsqueda de mayor amplitud conceptual para el rock. Ésa era una necesidad sentida: en el mismo año, The Rolling Stones incluían una canción de once minutos -lo nunca visto hasta entonces en su álbum Aftermath, una de sus obras claves.

Eric Clapton (30 de marzo de 1945, Ripley, Surrey), había sido miembro de los Yardbirds y los Bluesbreakers de John Mayall. Jack Bruce (14 de mayo de 1943, Glasgow, Escocia), había estado con Manfred Mann y Graham Bond. Ginger Baker (19 de mayo de 1939, Lewishan, Londres) también había figurado en ese último grupo. Eran considerados la crema, pero no tenían un duro en sus bolsillos. Formaron la mejor banda de blues y rock del mundo y diseñaron el estilo que imperó a partir de 1969.

Su primer sencillo, Wrapping paper, fue un adelanto de su sonido, plenamente configurado en el siguiente, I feel free. Su primer álbum, Fresh Cream, resultó toda una innovación, y el siguiente, Disraeli Gears, fue declarado disco del año en muchos países (1968).

A lo largo de 1968, Cream irrumpe en Estados Unidos con una gira apoteósica, su doble álbum Wheels on fire se considera su obra cumbre. Pero el gigantismo del grupo mina la estabilidad del trío. Los músicos piensan que es mejor retirarse en plena gloria, y el 26 de noviembre de 1968 dan su concierto de despedida en el Royal Albert Hall de Londres. El concierto es filmado y grabado. De ahí surgen una película y el último álbum Goodbye.

Tras la separación se editan discos con material conocido y actuaciones en vivo. Clapton formará Blind Faith, otro grupo decisivo y Ginger Baker, Air Force y luego Baker Gurvitz Army. Jack Bruce graba en solitario, con John McLaughlin primero y Larry Coryell, Mike Mandel y Mitch Mitchell después. Forma el grupo West, Bruce and Laing y un supergrupo con Mick Taylor (ex stones) y otros, y llega a componer la Jack Bruce Band. De la leyenda Cream solamente Eric Clapton ha mantenido y aumentado lo conseguido en ella.

En 1993 se reunieron con motivo de su introducción al salón de la fama del rock, donde tocaron unas pocas piezas. Pero la gran reunión se dió en mayo de 2005 donde ofrecieron de nuevo una serie de conciertos en el Royal Albert Hall de Londres donde interpretaron nuevamente algunas de sus creaciones más emblemáticas. De estos conciertos se grabó un álbum doble. A fines de Octubre de 2005 ofrecieron tres conciertos en el Madison Square Garden en Nueva York
